I'm sorry. I don't usually post excerpts here. But this is my absolute favorite exchange in the whole book:

"Oh, no. I think you need to do what I say." Stefan listened for a moment, then shook his head. "I breached your Council's wards, Gabriel. I have..." He put his hand over the mouthpiece. "Michael, is it?"

"You won't get away with this," Michael whispered.

Stefan laughed. "Michael," he said into the phone. "And Sarah. Lovely Sarah. They've already resorted to using clichés."
